Arts On Line Is Beautiful
?Arts on line,? now there is an odd expression. A few decades ago, it would have had no meaning at all. Today, we understand that it means art online, on the Internet. From eBay to the National Gallery to anything in between, various web sites provide ways for people to view and/or buy art.
For decades, or more properly, for centuries, artists were severely limited in getting their works before the public. During the Renaissance, most artists had a patron, someone who supported them and helped to promote their works. Eventually, this evolved into gallery owners who would take in the works of various artists, give them private showings, and in general work to make them popular.
Today, an artist can create their own web site, no matter what medium them work in: oils, watercolors, sculptures etc. and offer them to the public. Often the Internet is criticized for its negative aspects: predators trolling for underage youths, pornography etc. So, it is refreshing when something of a worthwhile nature comes along.
For, it must be remembered, all these artists of the past had one thing in common. No, not talent, although that certainly played a part. An artist with a patron or a gallery helping them first had to please someone, whether person or committee, before their works could reach the public. Well, but what of those artists who did not find someone who liked what they had created? Their talent never found a home, was never appreciated.
Having arts on line offers painters, sculptures, writers, singers etc. an opportunity unprecedented in the history of art. They can put their works before the public without having to first impress a patron, a committee, a gallery owner or anyone else! Their work is clean, pure, unfettered and uncluttered by someone else?s opinion of what is or is not art! Think of the opportunities that offers.
How often have we heard of an artist having to change something about their work in order to gain the approval of the powers that be? Filmmakers have changed the ends of their movies to gain acceptance by the studios that backed them. Today, what is available at the stores? The ?Director?s Cut? of many movies. When the Rolling Stones appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, they had to change ?Let?s Spend the Night Together? to ?Let?s Spend Some Time Together? to appease the censors.
So, to all the naysayers who claim that putting art on the Internet will cheapen and degrade it, consider it as just the opposite. Art, free of the constraints of the critics is art in its purest form - art that exists merely to be art.
